On December 18, 2013, a user of the BitcoinTalk forum under the nickname GameKyuubi drunkenly misspelled the word HOLD.

In his post, he discussed the uselessness of Bitcoin trading. In those years, he came to the idea that it was better to simply hold Bitcoin, and not guess the bottom and peaks.

There were so many errors and repeated typos that the forum article quickly became a meme, and the word HODL came into use.
